No Ordinary Family: “No Ordinary Ring”

Posted by therebelprince on October 18, 2010

Sometimes I feel really sorry for comic book lovers. Due to the relative niche of their interests, superhero/action series tend to fall in to two camps: the flabby formula dreck starring generic-looking thirtysomethings-posing-as-teens (Smallville), or those that genuinely try and incorporate a mythology and fantasy tropes, but as such are resigned to low-budget writing, directing and acting (Legend of the Seeker).

Every once in a while, though, a network decides to reward these patient fans with a show that has a network-sized budget: hire some real actors! use some special effects! Unfortunately, this particular network is clearly not the right place to achieve this. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with No Ordinary Family. Just… well, there isn’t anything.

Modern Family: “Earthquake”

Nathan Lane as Cam and Mitchell’s even more flamboyant, brunch-throwing, costume-wearing, neurotic friend? Really?

No Ordinary Family: “Pilot”

Posted by therebelprince on October 1, 2010

I wasn’t going to watch No Ordinary Family. The idea seemed a bit too network-perfect for me, and – even though I’m one of the few who defends Heroes season 2 (at least in concept) – we’ve been burned before. But a few people I know came out in favour of it, so I gave the show a chance. And you know what? I’m glad I did.

My Generation: “Pilot”

Posted by therebelprince on September 28, 2010

I tuned in to My Generation, and I’m sad to say it isn’t as excrutiatingly bad as I thought it would be. Nope, it’s just the regular sort of bad.

LOST Rewatch: “Maternity Leave”, “The Whole Truth”, “Lockdown” & “Dave”

Posted by therebelprince on August 16, 2009

“When I need the guns, I’ll get the guns.”

– Jack Shephard

It’s an odd set of episodes this week. Among them, the worst episode to date: “Maternity Leave”, and some pretty good dynamics in “The Whole Truth” and “Lockdown”, which somewhat opens us up for the next chapter of Lost. Read the rest of this entry »

Twin Peaks: Episode Nine Review

Posted by therebelprince on August 15, 2009

“Where does creamed corn figure into the workings of the universe? What really *is* creamed corn? Is it a symbol for something else?”

– The Log Lady’s Introduction

This week on Twin Peaks, plenty of clues and exposition, as well as some genuine weirdness; in fact, it feels like we’re still in season one.

(Now’s the time to point out that I’ll be pretty fast and loose with plot details about the series from here on: if you haven’t watched the rest of the show, think twice about reading further!)

The pressure of the networks, the critics and the audiences had prevailed, and David Lynch and Mark Frost relucantly began the march toward the revelation of Laura’s killer. It’s actually confirmed in this episode, but the audience weren’t to know that… Read the rest of this entry »

Better Off Ted: “Jabberwocky” and “Secrets and Lives”

Posted by therebelprince on August 13, 2009

From TV.Com “So, it’s a lie?”

“We prefer to think of it as a dream.”

– Ted and Veronica

Thus endeth the first season of Better Off Ted, a show which has remarkably obtained a second season in the face of overwhelming odds – and I couldn’t be happier for it. Read the rest of this entry »

LOST Rewatch: “The Hunting Party”, “Fire + Water”, “The Long Con” & “One of Them”

Posted by therebelprince on August 8, 2009

“This is not your island. This is our island.” – “Mr. Friendly”

This week, we get some exciting episodes as Charlie and Sawyer make ripples in the pond of island life, and we meet our next Other (though we don’t know it yet)… It’s all in a day’s work over at Lost.

I’ve gotta admit the second season, while widening its scope, has actually revealed very little. No wonder there were quickly calls of dissent among fans who suspected the series was going nowhere. It’s a real pity that ABC couldn’t put aside their initial money lust to give a definite length – be it three, four, five or six seasons – because the producers could have avoided some of the unncessary thumb-twiddling that took place last week to carry on with the story. Every episode this week (except perhaps “Fire + Water”) gives us something to work with in the series’ overall mythology, so at least we’re moving in the right direction. Twin Peaks: Episode Eight Review

Posted by therebelprince on August 6, 2009

“It’s not so bad as long as you can keep the fear from your mind.”

– Dale Cooper, echoing the series.

Well, well, well. It was nineteen years ago – September 30, 1990 – when, after the arduous hiatus, the world finally returned to Twin Peaks with the second season premiere. Mark Frost and David Lynch held us all in the palm of their hand and they could do whatever they wanted. As it turned out, they did just that – and within months the watercooler show of the decade was languishing at the very bottom of the Nielsen ratings. How they achieved this dubious honour is something we’ll explore in the next few weeks. Read the rest of this entry »

LOST Rewatch: “The Other 48 Days”, “Collision”, “What Kate Did” & “The 23rd Psalm”

Posted by therebelprince on July 31, 2009

This week, almost nothing happens on the Island. I know, amazing right? Second season of one of the biggest hits of the decade and not a thing goes down. But it contains some nice character moments, and we learn what Kate did, so it’s not a total loss. Read the rest of this entry »
